MAINTENANCE OF PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS
This division has 386 acres of park land at various sites, including 17
playgrounds and 6 city athletic facilities (Custenborder, Flanagan, Harmon,
Baumgarden, Landrum and Julia Lamb),. Parks Department employees are responsible
for mowing, litter removal and preparation of the baseball, softball and
soccer fields for league activities.
PARKS & GROUNDS
This division assisted by seasonal workers takes care of numerous beauty
areas totaling approximately 250 acres located within the City boundaries.
Department employees perform the weed mowing for those private properties
in violation of the City's weed ordinance. They also mow the grass along
St.Rt. #47 within the City limits, the green area by the Great Miami River
and do various other grounds maintenance projects.
Park Rangers are in charge of patrolling all parks and park grounds.
MUNICIPAL SWIMMING POOL
This popular facility is open from the first Saturday after Memorial Day
until two weeks before Labor Day. The staff includes a Pool Manager, an
Assistant Manager, and approximately 14 full-time lifeguards and 15 substitute
lifeguards. These employees must be fully trained and certified in life
saving skills. In addition to being liable for the safety of customers,
they are responsible for water quality and appearance of the pool area.
Free swim lessons are offered at the pool in June and July. Must pre-register
with the Parks and Recreation Department. In 2005 a 295 foot long slide
was installed made up of a speed slide and also a spiral slide.

MONARCH COMMUNITY CENTER

This Community Center was opened in June of 1998 and is the home of the
Senior Center. It is maintained by the Parks & Recreation Department

This lovely notable building, in downtown Sidney, has varied meeting
rooms and banquet facilities available. Rooms are able to accommodate
your small group of 5 or up to 400 people in the Cameo Theatre. The Cameo
Theatre room features a stage with dressing area, vaulted ceilings, large
kitchen and hard wood floors.
Please contact Casey Beardslee for specific fee schedules. Discount prices
are available to members of the Senior Center in good standing.

RECREATION PROGRAM
The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for the Recreation Programming
along with overseeing the Sidney Municipal Pool. The Recreation Programming
runs for 8 weeks each summer and is staffed by two supervisors and 15
playground leaders. Supervised activities are provided for arts and crafts
in addition to games for children at various City parks. Clinics are held
for children completing 3rd through 8th grade to teach skills in bowling,
golf, baseball, fast-pitch softball, Tae Kwon Do, roller skating, mini
miles, ceramics, Pop- Bottle science, science concoctions, space, canoeing,
fishing, kites, scrapbooking, tye-dye, Fun Day, art, basketball, cheerleading,dance,diving,
football, gymnastics,life cycles, soccer, slow- pitch softball, swim stroke,
syncronized swimming, tennis, under sea, sand volleyball, wrestling. Included
in the activities are “Stories in the Park” which is offered
in our City parks by the Children’s Department of Amos Memorial
Library and 4-H Day in the Park activities sponsored by Ohio State University
Extension; there is no charge for any of these programs.
FOOD PROGRAM
The department also administers the summer food lunch program funded by
the Ohio Department of Education. This provides free nutritionally balanced
lunches at the sites of Humphrey Park and Alpha Center for children ages
1 through 18. Wilson Memorial Hospital prepares the hot meals Monday -
Friday.
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT
Every year in consultation with the Recreation Board, a list of proposed
Capital Improvement Projects/estimated costs is prepared. An attempt is
always made to meet priority needs and provide the citizens of Sidney
with safe, wholesome leisure activities.
